Course Description: This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn skills enabling them to practice good health habits for a lifetime. The students will be learning issues related to their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Assignments will involve individual and/or group work on readings, notes, projects, presentations and handouts. Additionally, we may have guest speaker presentations and watch educational videos throughout the semester. Students will need to join Google Classroom to have access to many assignments; they will receive the class code during the first weeks of school.
Goals and Objectives: To give the students working knowledge in the following areas:
1. Mental Health 5. Substance Abuse
2. Social Health 6. Human Development
3. Nutrition 7. Preventing Disease
4. Physical Fitness 8. Community Health and Safety
Rules:
- Be on time, prepared, and ready to work at the beginning of the class.
- Please raise your hand when you wish to speak, and wait to be called upon.
- Please listen intently!
- Please treat others as you would like to be treated.
Consequences:
First consequence - Warning
Second consequence - Participation Points Lost (1-10 for each day).
Third consequence - Administrative Referral
Grading Standards: The following scale will used as a guideline for grading:
A+ = 100% + C+ = 77% - 79% F = 59% and
A = 93% - 99% C = 73% - 76% below
A- = 90% - 92% C- = 70% - 72%
B+ = 87% - 89% D+ = 67% - 69%
B = 83% - 86% D = 63% - 66%
B- = 80% - 82% D- = 60% - 62%
Homework/Notes = 60% of total grade
Participation = 10% of total grade
Quizzes/Tests = 20% of total grade
Final Exam = 10% of total grade
Absences: If absent, students will have 2 days when they return to complete assignments. While absent, you may be able to check Google Classroom or the class website to stay caught up.
Late Work: Assignments will be accepted for full credit as long as they are submitted before the unit exam. If submitted after the unit exam, they will be worth half credit, unless the student has made a prior plan with me.
Tardy Policy: You will be given 1 “freebie” – after that you will lose 5pts from your participation for the day with each tardy, after your 3rd tardy you will receive an administrative referral.
It is YOUR responsibility to know the rules and policies of Oak Ridge High School!
Unless otherwise instructed by the teacher, students shall turn off, not use, and keep out of sight cell phones and other signaling devices during the class period. Furthermore, any listening, recording, or videotaping of peers, teachers, or visitors to the classroom without prior consent is prohibited.
